Hard to believe, Blaze Foley has been gone for almost three decades. His music tells the story of his life, sometimes in prophetic ways.

You’re gonna wish someday
I’ll be back your way,
but I’ll be long gone.

Someday,
maybe someday,
you might want me back again.

This theme, from two different songs, repeats in many of his songs. At the risk of simplifying and speculating, he seemed to have searched most of his life for a love he lost. It’s a searching shared by many people, myself included, which makes it easy to empathize with him, wishing he’d found that love, no matter how fleeting.

And yet wherever he went, he seems to have found people who loved him and wished the best for him. Blaze’s story is a gentle reminder that love is always in the moment, always fleeting, not in the future or past, and must be appreciated and cared for in the moment. We can trust love but never ever take it for granted. Life doesn’t guarantee love nor does it owe us love. We can accept it on its own terms, not our own, and not for any length of time we wish for. If you have love, hold on to it but not too tightly, appreciate it and let your loved one know they are loved in return.
